At TECTERRA, we believe in the power of innovation to shape the future, and our partnership with the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering embodies this commitment. Through strategic funding, TECTERRA has ignited transformative changes within the Department of Geomatics Engineering, fostering an environment where students thrive as future leaders in technology and innovation.
Our support has been instrumental in embedding technology entrepreneurship into the core curriculum, ensuring that every Geomatics Engineering graduate leaves with a strong foundation in entrepreneurship. This initiative provides consultation between faculty members and industry partners to integrate entrepreneurial content into courses. In the upcoming 2024/2025 academic year, students will have access to a curriculum enriched with real-world insights and opportunities to learn directly from industry experts.
“I am grateful for the University of Calgary’s geomatics program, which has provided me with countless opportunities to grow both academically and professionally. The program’s strong emphasis on student involvement, supported by initiatives from the Geomatics Engineering Student Society (GESS) and our dedicated professors, has allowed me to engage in networking events, career fairs, and research projects. These experiences have not only broadened my knowledge but also connected me with industry professionals and peers, which has been invaluable in shaping my career path.” – Alieen Mulaw | TECTERRA Scholarship Recipient
One of the standout successes of our funding is the expansion of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities. With over 40 industry partners engaged, the TECTERRA Startup and Innovation Summer Student Awards program has connected students with geomatics startups, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience in entrepreneurship and commercialization. These opportunities not only enhance students’ technical skills but also prepare them to navigate the dynamic landscape of technology startups.
TECTERRA’s funding has helped expand the department’s capacity to support Active Learning initiatives, equipping students with the practical skills needed to excel in the industry. With the recent addition of the Geomatics Active Learning Technician, students will have access to the latest equipment and software, further bridging the gap between academic learning and industry demands.
TECTERRA’s influence extends beyond the classroom. In February 2024, we proudly supported the first-ever Geomatics Engineering-focused hackathon, a groundbreaking event that challenged first-year engineering students to solve real-world problems. This hackathon is just the beginning as we continue to explore ways to further integrate entrepreneurship into student competitions and initiatives.

Our commitment to student success is further exemplified through scholarships and bursaries. To date, six outstanding students have received TECTERRA Geomatics Bursaries and Scholarships, each recognizing their academic excellence and potential to contribute to the field. While these awards are relatively new, we are confident that these recipients will achieve remarkable success in their careers.
In recognition of TECTERRA’s ongoing contributions, we are honored to have a dedicated space within the Schulich School of Engineering named after us. “The TECTERRA Boardroom” stands as a testament to our enduring legacy and the lasting impact we aim to make on the geomatics industry.
As we look to the future, TECTERRA remains committed to fostering innovation, supporting students, and driving the next wave of technological advancements. Through our partnership with the University of Calgary, we are not only shaping the future of geomatics engineering but also empowering the next generation of innovators.
